林语汀

Lín Yǔtīng

Read meaning and source

语 suggests expressive, graceful speech; 汀 means a level bank beside water. A gentle, open name with a bookish feel.

搴汀洲兮杜若,将以遗兮远者。

Songs of Chu · Nine Songs · The Lady of the Xiang — an allusion through 汀
Considered but not picked: 林芷晴 · a bit brighter and livelier than the soft, bookish style this search asked for.

We didn't pick 林芷晴 because its brighter, livelier feel is less aligned with the gentle, literary direction you chose.

Three things that make naming a baby hard

The name sounds lovely — until you say it with your surname

It's easy to miss, until a relative says it out loud.

We check the full name, surname included, for sounds that could turn into something embarrassing in Mandarin or Cantonese. (Some surnames get the Mandarin check only, for now.)

Grandma asks what the name means, and all you've got is "it sounds nice"

We explain what each name means and why we picked it. If it comes from a poem or a classic book, we tell you which one and quote the line.

You've looked at hundreds of names and still can't choose

The lists go on and on, and nothing tells you which ones are any good.

Start with 3 free. The full report gives you 5 to 8, each with a reason — plus names we considered but didn't pick, and why.

林语溪

We didn't pick 林语溪 because its waterside imagery is too close to 林语汀, so we kept 林语汀, which has the clearer literary source.

A successfully generated full report contains 5–8 names. Narrow preferences may leave just 5. Each has a reason, and names we considered but didn't pick have reasons too.

Start with your surname and the way your family says it

Some surnames can be read more than one way — pick the one your family uses.

See coverage and a naming example

We use surname-specific readings for 183 surnames. A surname outside that list can still be used if it has one or two characters, both are in the standard character table, and you confirm its Mandarin pronunciation.

Read spelling and document notes

Your report shows the one spelling you pick. With Singapore/Malaysia style, only the surname changes — the given name stays in Pinyin (standard Mandarin spelling). These spellings are a guide; for anything official, go by your passport or birth certificate.

Registration rules and family dialects vary. We can't confirm a spelling with a registration office on your behalf.

Say it with the surname before you decide

Hear the full name out loud

We check the name together with the surname for Mandarin and Cantonese sound-alikes. Surnames without Cantonese reading data get the Mandarin check only.

A note for anyone choosing a name

A Chinese name for your child, in a spelling your family knows

Travelling through Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong, I kept hearing the same difficulty: families wanted a Chinese name for their child, but struggled to find the spellings they knew. So I started building it. You can already choose Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore/Malaysia spelling. Singapore/Malaysia spelling for given names is still on the way.
